Our History
1873-1994
To escape the "augue," a malarial disease causing intermittent fever and chills, Henry and Sarah Winters packed up their eight children and headed West from Ohio to Kansas. They arrived in April of 1873, making an improvised tent their home, acquiring homestead rights for a property East of Hays City. It is on this plot of land that the Winters family built a large stone home which still stands today known as Cedar Lodge Dental Group. After Winter’s passing in 1897, his grandson, Jack Struble, lived in the old rock house and farmed the land until 1970 when the property was sold to Henry Schwaller II. Schwaller acquired the house along with a parcel of land from 22nd and Vine to 27th and Indian Trail, building a shopping center, bowling alley, and converting the old stone house into a bar operated by Henry Schwaller III. The home was then remodeled into the Coachman Inn Restaurant and operated until 1994 when the building was purchased and transformed into a dental office.

1994-Present
After purchase, Dave and Sandy Berry redesigned the home to become a dental office resembling a hunting lodge and operated until 2007 when the current owner of the stone house, Dr. Paul Jones, purchased the practice. Since 2007, Paul and Steph Jones have spent countless hours renovating the office. They have worked to preserve many of the stone houses original features, while also including an addition of stone Jones' great-great-grandfather had quarried for his homestead near Alexander. "The walls were falling down, so we took some of that stone, brought it down here and had some masons veneer it off and put it on our front desk." Jones, with a talent for stone carving, used a large piece of flagstone from his family's land to carve the Cedar Lodge Dental Group logo placed prominently in the front office. While the building has serviced many industries over the years, Cedar Lodge Dental Group is proud to be able to continue serving the community in one of Hays’ oldest structures.
