Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) refers to dysfunction involving the jaw joints, muscles,
bite, and surrounding structures that control jaw movement and function. The
temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect the jaw to the skull and play an important role in
chewing, speaking, breathing, and overall comfort.

TMD can present in many different ways and is often connected to muscle tension, bite
imbalance, clenching or grinding habits, stress, or joint instability. In many patients, the
underlying issue is related to the way the teeth and jaws fit together. When the bite is unstable or
unbalanced, the muscles and joints may compensate over time, leading to chronic tension,
inflammation, and pain.
Common signs and symptoms of TMD may include:

  • Jaw pain or soreness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding of the jaw joints
  • History of lockjaw or limited jaw opening
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Neck, shoulder, facial, or eye pain
  • Ear pain, ringing, fullness, or congestion
  • Clenching or teeth grinding
  • Difficulty chewing or jaw fatigue
  • Muscle tension or facial soreness

Our approach focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of TMD whenever
possible, not simply masking symptoms with an appliance alone. Treatment recommendations
vary depending on the patient’s specific condition and may include oral appliances, orthodontic
considerations, myofunctional therapy, habit awareness, or coordination with other healthcare
providers.

While many TMD cases can be successfully managed within our office, some patients may
require additional care from specialists. If a case falls outside the scope of what we can
appropriately treat, we will help guide you to the provider best suited for your needs.
