Childhood Growth and Development

Our focus is on providing treatment for children to enhance the growth potential of their jaws and airway, while creating space for their adult teeth to come in. By starting treatment at an early age, typically between 3 to 5 years old, we can take advantage of their natural growth and development. With children, we have the opportunity to intervene early and address any potential issues before they become long-standing problems. Our goal is to prevent conditions like TMJ, sleep apnea, and crooked teeth that often affect adults.

At Cedar Lodge Dental Group we have designed a protocol to guide the growth of the jaw structure, develop a healthy airway, and create sufficient space for proper teeth alignment. We begin by assessing your child for any tongue or lip ties that may be hindering their growth. If a functional assessment reveals a tethered or restrictive tongue or lip tie, we may perform a tie release (frenuloplasty). Additionally, our highly trained myofunctional therapists can work with your child to instill important habits such as keeping their lips together, resting their tongue against the roof of the mouth, and breathing through their nose.

We utilize both removable and fixed appliances to aid in jaw expansion, often referred to as phase 1 orthodontics. By intervening early, our goal is to minimize the need for extensive orthodontic treatment or tooth extraction. If necessary, a phase 2 orthodontic treatment can be performed later with braces or Invisalign. We also screen for inflamed tonsils and adenoids, which can contribute to mouth breathing, narrow jaws, ADHD, and crooked teeth.

The VIVOS approach extends beyond orthodontic treatment. We believe in teaching parents the connection between teeth, nutrition, and the healing power of proper breathing. Epigenetics teaches us that our lifestyle choices can positively or negatively influence our genes. While jaw expansion is essential, we also focus on the overall development of the body and mind, promoting natural health. We advocate for nutrient-rich, bone-building diets, regular exercise, proper breathing techniques, and adequate deep sleep. These factors help reduce inflammation in the body and support optimal development for your child to thrive. As a parent, you are not alone on this journey. We are here to guide and educate you on these foundational building blocks.

We believe in a collaborative approach to care and work closely with other specialists to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child. Our network includes airway-focused ENTs, Myofunctional Therapists, Chiropractors, Sleep Physicians, and Speech Therapists, among others. We will provide guidance and make recommendations based on your child's specific needs, ensuring they receive comprehensive and well-rounded care.

At our practice, we are dedicated to helping your child reach their full potential by addressing their oral and overall health needs. Together, let's empower your child to breathe, grow, and thrive.
